Multiliteracies Language Teaching in World Language Classrooms

Multiliteracies Language Teaching in World Language Classrooms offers Open Educational professional development resources for world language teachers and teacher educators in various less commonly taught languages.

Each set of materials features videos of teachers-in-action teaching through multiliteracies pedagogies, and supplemental resources in the form of lesson plans. Each video includes selected segments from the class taught, as well as a reflective interview with the teacher about their lesson.

Lessons incorporate principles such as teaching learners to: 1) interpret and produce multimodal genres; 2) engage in dynamic, multilingual literacy practices; 3) appreciate how language and other semiotic resources work to reflect and constitute culture; while also focusing on acquiring linguistic and symbolic resources needed to engage in interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational communication.

Multiliteracies Language Teaching in World Language Classrooms has been supported by a project grant through the Center for Educational Resources in Culture, Language, and Literacy at the University of Arizona.

The project arose from the perennial challenges inherent in transposing knowledge gleaned from documents-as-models to the enactment of lessons, and a desire to provide alternative models of teaching for multiliteracies in the form of videos. While multiliteracies pedagogies have gained currency in scholarship, expanding access to materials that showcase practices in action can better support their enactment in world language classrooms. This is what this project seeks to offer.

We hope that these materials can be helpful for teachers across multiple languages, as well as teacher educators.
