Frequently Asked Questions

What is the LLC Commons?

The LLC Commons (which stands for Language, Literature, Culture) is a collection of open materials and information focused on technology-enhanced teaching in Slavic languages and cultures. It includes a searchable repository of online materials for language teaching, a map with information about online courses offered in Slavic in the United States, in addition to other resources.

Who supports the LLC Commons?

The LLC Commons was created by Dr. Liudmila Klimanova (University of Arizona) and Dr. Shannon Donnally Quinn (Michigan State University) with a grant from the Center for Educational Resources in Culture, Language and Literacy at the University of Arizona. Many of the materials were created with the support of the University of Arizona, Michigan State University, and Middlebury College School of Russian.

What kinds of materials are available?

As of now, our collection is mostly lower-level Russian language materials, but we are working on expanding our collection.

Can I use the materials for free? Can I alter the materials for my own purposes?

Yes, the materials are licensed with a Creative Commons CC BY-NC-SA (Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike) license. This means that you can use and modify these materials as long as you attribute the original author, don’t use them for commercial purposes, and also share with others the work that you created from the materials. Visit our page What is Creative Commons? to learn more.

How can I search for materials?

You can search for materials by going to the search page and then either choosing categories from the drop-down menus or by typing words into the search box. Topics are categorized by more broad categories but also tagged with more specific keywords.

You can also use the Find Materials by Topic page to find a list of popular topics. Click on a topic to see a list of related activities.

If you are using one of the popular lower-level Russian language textbooks, you might be able to find the materials organized in the order of your textbook.

How can I put the materials on my own website?

We have several types of materials that often have several ways of using them, so we have separate pages that help you figure out how best to use them in your context.
