Undergraduate Researchers

Nick Gurrola. I am a first-generation college Sophomore at the University of Arizona (still deciding about majoring in Graphic Design and minoring in Spanish; vise versa). This is my first time being in a research group that involves going to different and diverse places around South Tucson and doing interviews for the Language Capital Project. Many people that come from outside from Tucson don’t realize the amount of cultural diversity present in this region and that’s what this research group is all about. It is to inform them that Tucson is a great city to live. I like doing this kind of research because it gets me to know more about my community and the type of diversity we are surrounded with.

Julia Pérez. I am a first-generation college junior at the University of Arizona majoring in Psychology and minoring in Spanish. Currently, I am an undergraduate researcher doing ethnographic research and interviewing for the Language Capital Project, for the year of 2018. So far, I’ve explored the linguistic diversity in the Marana community by evaluating the place-meaning and language atmosphere of bilingual spaces. My research interests include: education, culture, diversity, linguistics, bilingualism, identity, personality, child development, behavior, cognitive deficits, and much more.

Community Researcher

Sang-yeon Lee, a native of South Korea, has worked in public and non-profit programs for over a decade, with a focus on international and community-based development. Most recently, she served as an Outreach Coordinator for a citywide refugee education service in Tucson, AZ. She currently lives in North Carolina but continues to Bear Down.

Application Developer

Naveed Ahmed is working as GIS Application Developer at the University of Arizona. He graduated in GIST from the University of Arizona in 2015. He also holds a Masters degree in GIS and Remote Sensing from the National University of Science and Technology Pakistan and an undergrad degree in Computer Science with a programming major. He has almost eleven years of Software development and GIS Analyst experience with different IT departments.
